Choosing and Maintaining Air Conditioning Systems
![]() |
There are different types of air conditioning systems that can effectively cool your home in even the hottest weather. The best type of system for your needs will depend on your budget and how large of an area you need to cool. For example, central air conditioning is the most expensive but cools the largest area. There are also central type systems called ductless systems that don't require extensive ductwork to be installed. Window unit air conditioners can cool a decent sized room but may not effectively cool your entire home. There are also small portable air conditioners that can be taken on the go or used to cool small rooms.
Your air conditioner, at least if it is the central air variety, should last around 15 years if you care for it properly. There are some steps you can take to maintain your system and keep it running effectively. First, check the hoses periodically and make sure there are no leaks. You should also make sure the condenser tube is draining without any problems. You should replace your furnace filter once per month to avoid the circulation of allergens in your home. Air vents should be vacuumed regularly, and ductwork should be professionally cleaned every few years. During the winter, the compressor should be covered and window units should be removed until warmer weather returns.
When you purchase a new air conditioning unit, you should be provided with a manual that instructs you on the proper care and maintenance. Sometimes, it is necessary to replace certain parts if they fail or stop working properly. The compressor is a commonly replaced part that you can purchase on its own so that your entire unit need not be replaced if it fails. If you purchase central air that is installed by a professional, they should educate you on the use and care of your new system.
Air conditioning systems are one of the finest innovations of the modern age. You don't have to suffer in sweltering heat anymore. Once you experience the luxury of an air conditioned home you'll never want to live any other way. Thanks to recent advancements, the newest air conditioners offer more energy efficient operation than ever before. Researchers are currently looking at ways to increase air filtration and ecologically friendly features of new air conditioners being developed. This means that your air conditioner may actually improve the air quality in your home while being safe for the environment.
